Braces Q & A

What are braces?

Braces are common orthodontic appliances used to correct misaligned teeth. Braces work by applying pressure to your teeth to move them in the right direction. As your teeth move, your jawbone changes shape to correct your bite.

Most braces have brackets cemented to the front of your teeth. Wires are then threaded through the brackets to pull and push your teeth into place over time. The My Tooth Place team can use rubber bands, springs, bands, and more to help your teeth move when you have orthodontic braces.

Many patients have braces for 1-3 years, but the time it takes to straighten your teeth will be unique to you. After your braces are removed, you may be given a retainer to wear to keep your teeth from moving out of alignment.

What can braces treat?

The My Tooth Place team recommends braces for many tweens, teens, and adults with crooked, misaligned, or crowded teeth. Common conditions that braces fix include:

  • Overcrowded teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Uneven bite

Teeth that are properly aligned not only improve the look of your teeth but can also improve the function of your mouth. Your teeth and jaw work together to help you chew food and speak clearly, and straight teeth ensure they work correctly.

What types of braces are available at My Tooth Place?

Every patient’s needs are different, and the team at My Tooth Place offers a wide variety of braces to fit your lifestyle. Traditional braces are made from metal brackets cemented to your teeth with metal wires running through them. Metal braces are one of the most effective methods for correcting extreme misalignments and overcrowding.

Ceramic braces are similar to traditional metal braces but use different materials. Ceramic brackets are transparent or tooth-colored to blend in with your teeth. The wires between the brackets can be transparent as well. If you need traditional braces but don’t want metal brackets, ceramic braces could be right for you.

Clear aligners are another popular option for straightening teeth. Aligner systems correct many common misalignments and malocclusions with a series of clear aligners customized for you. Most patients wear a new set of aligners every 1-2 weeks, and teeth gently move into alignment.

At My Tooth Place, you’ll find comprehensive orthodontic care for children, teens, and adults. Call the office or request an appointment online to find out what type of braces might be right for you or your child.
