What is a crown?

A crown is a tooth covering that can improve the appearance of your teeth and reinforce a weak tooth. Sometimes called a cap, it hides discoloration or damage. How does a dentist place a crown on a tooth?

Placing a crown usually takes two or more appointments.

During the first appointment, your dentist numbs the area around the tooth and the tooth itself before shaping it to fit inside the new crown. If there isn’t much tooth left, they rebuild it using filling material. Next, they take impressions of your teeth that are used to make your new crown. They then place a temporary crown until your new crown is ready.

During your next appointment, they fit the permanent crown, making subtle adjustments to make sure it’s snug and comfortable. If necessary, they can bring you back for further adjustments.
